If you're talking exclusively about MobileConnect, Marketing Cloud will use SMS messages. Those can be sent to an iPhone (and read in iMessage) and they can be sent from an iPhone (using iMessage) and that can trigger actions within the Marketing Cloud such as an SMS auto response. MobileConnect will not, however, tell you if someone has read or opened your message.
MobilePush will give you open information, but that would be a push notification sent to a user through an app that you, most likely, have developed.
