I have had a user that mistakenly created a list view that was only available to him whereby his criteria was to vague that it is causing a time out error.
I have seen that something similar has been mentioned before (https://success.salesforce.com/answers?id=90630000000DGfDAAW) but as this is a private list view i cant use the same answer.
Any ideas how to delete custom private list views?

That happens. You'll have to see if they hardcoded to a specific list view, or if they've enabled some kind of "pick me as a default" situation on the page.
After hours you could revert back to standard layout, login as user, delete the list view, log back out, change back to VF page but it's a bit risky. I'd be inclined to let a developer look at it first
