Best practices for an opportunity description?

We're getting a lot of irrelevant and unhelpful information in the description field on opportunities, irregardless of training on how to fill the field out and help text. Is there a good way other people are solving this? We're looking specifically for where a deal is at. Thanks!

    Opportunity Products are a good way to standardize this.  

     

    You might want to consider getting away from using the free-form text field, and using standard field like Opportunity Type or creating custom Custom Picklist and Check box fields to help standarize things.
