We did this for our I.T. team members at my last company - not so much as a requirement of the employee as it was an opportunity to kind of show everyone in the company how far along you are in your learning process.
If the Trailhead "Profile Public" setting is set to Yes, then it's externally viewable and the employee can add the link to their Trailhead Profile to the Overview section of their User Profile in the Salesforce Production instance...or you or your Admin can create a sub-tab on the Profile just for Trailhead.
The Trailhead accounts also have options to connect with LinkedIn and Facebook profiles.
