Would it be possible to configure this bit using visual flow? I've read it's possble to use force.com sites with visual flow, but can I pass it an individual Id, from an email? If not, then are there any other declarative methods or very light programmatic methods that do not involve purchasing an appexchange product?

Hi Glenn,
This may be possible using Visual Flow, however update or creation of Contact Roles does not trigger Process Builder which can be used to run flows. If you can create a simple trigger that will invoke a flow action, this may be possible.
