Allow one user edit rights to one contact field only - for all records. Permission set won't work

Our contacts are set to private but there are sharing rules so some users can see other user's contacts.  I have one user who I want to be able to update one field on all the sales team's contacts, but I don't want them to be able to update any other field within that contact. 

 

I have tried adding a permission set, Object settings Contact Read & Edit with Edit permission on the particular field, with the user assigend.

 

If I log in as that user I can see the record, I can double click on the field to edit it, but I get an insufficient privileges error message when I try and save.

 

What am I doing wrong? I can't work it out...

    Hi Sara,

     

    Does the User have edit permission on the contact record?if they dont have edit permission on the contact record it does not matter whether they have edit permission on the field or not they will not be able to edit.
