Yes, that's the best way to do it (create the Account record first).
There is an option called "Quick Create" but trust me, you DO NOT want to use it. If you have Quick-Create enabled on your SFDC Org disable it now! If possible, go back in time and disable it even sooner! Or better yet go even further back and stop whoever created Quick-Create in the first place. If you can't do that, go back and stop their parents from meeting... yeah Quick-Create is THAT bad!
