What is the best way to end a campaign? We tried start and end date, but no luck

We ran a campaign over the past three days and are looking to attribute donations from those three days to that campaign. The problem we are running into is that everyone who has been attributed to that campaign will be logged as a donor to this campaign in the "primary campaign source" field even a week, month, etc. from now. How do you shut off a campaign, without having to erase the primary campaign source from every donation going forward?? We tried a start and end date, but no luck.
