How to create a report on past 'OPEN' cases - not opened

How do I create a report for a dashboard which shows me how many cases were set to open on a specific date?

 

I want the line graph to chart for example how many cases were OPEN (not opened) on

 

  1. 1st Feb 2012

  2. 1st March 2012

  3. 1st April 2012

  4. 1st May 2012

 

So this will show me a snapshot of OPEN cases 

 

any ideas?

    Is this really the only way to do this? It seems impractical for Salesforce to not offer the ability to report on this metric for past dates unless a certain report is run daily.
