is there any way to make an Open CTI adapter (Five9) show in Lightning somewhere other than in the Utility Bar? Like in console mode, could the CTI be set as a zone on the left side of the console. The current utility approach is causing trouble in both end user experience and technical issues related to timeouts.

Currently utility items can only show up in the utility bar, and the utility bar is always at the bottom of the screen. However the user can pop out the Five9 utility into a new browser window and then position that window anywhere on the monitor.
Also, my team released a backend feature to make the utility bar right-aligned. Maybe that would help your UX. More info on that here including how to request this configuration (spoiler alert: email me!):
