We are also shifting from Classic to Salesforce Lightning, is it best to shift over then begin data cleaning/customization and training or should we data clean first, then shift to Lightning?
We don't want to run in the danger of losing our data, fields, or record types once we make the move. What are some recommendation to go about shifting from Classic to Lightning and best practices to have in place before doing so in order to have a successful migration?

I agree with @Chris Fezza. Keep in mind because its a new interface, it gives you the opportunity to clean house. If you have the time and perhaps a budget if you need help, it's an opportunity to review and improve, but its at your discretion.
