Learn How Salesforce Takes Action For Nature and Get Involved

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:

  • Explain why Salesforce invests in nature.
  • Explain how Salesforce aligns its nature commitments with its core values and Nature Positive Strategy.
  • Describe our progress toward supporting 100 million trees and empowering ecopreneurs through technology.
  • Identify personal ways to support the conservation, restoration, and growth of trees.

Salesforce Takes a Values-Driven Approach

Since day one, Salesforce has focused on doing well in business while also doing good in our communities. Our core values—Trust, Customer Success, Innovation, Equality, and Sustainability—have helped to differentiate our culture and strengthen our relationships with all stakeholders.

Salesforce invests in nature because a stable, healthy planet is foundational to global economic prosperity, long-term customer success, and the well-being of all stakeholders. This commitment directly aligns with our core values, ensuring a resilient future for everyone, and we proudly invite others to join us in taking action for people and the planet.

Our Progress Toward 100 Million Trees

In 2022, Salesforce set an intentional goal to support and mobilize the conservation, restoration, and growth of 100 million trees by the end of the decade. We ensure our restoration commitments are executed with clear accountability:

  • Social Responsibility: Meaningfully engaging Indigenous peoples and local communities to ensure ecological projects yield tangible local economic and social benefits.
  • Ecological Responsibility: Prioritizing native, biodiverse forest ecosystems over monoculture plantations to secure long-term carbon storage, wildlife habitat, and watershed health.
  • Ocean and Blue Carbon: Expanding our focus into marine ecosystems with a commitment to contract 1 million tons of high-quality blue carbon credits by 2030.

Our Nature Positive Strategy

While our 100 million tree commitment is part of our approach, Salesforce’s commitment to nature does not start and stop with trees. Our Nature Positive Strategy articulates how we measure, manage, and scale our environmental impact across three mutually reinforcing pillars:

Pillar 1: Reduce Our Nature Impacts

First, we look at how our own business touches the environment and find ways to lighten our footprint. For example, because cloud software relies on servers and electricity, water is one of the most important natural resources we rely on. Our water program centers on:

  • Resilient Data Centers: Setting sustainable water withdrawal and efficiency standards across our operations and provider networks.
  • Resilient Power Supply: Advancing clean energy procurement to lower the water intensity associated with electricity generation.
  • Resilient Watersheds: Investing in community-led watershed restoration in high-priority regions to protect local ecosystems and clean drinking water.

Pillar 2: Lead Nature Restoration at Scale

Beyond minimizing our footprint, we also directly invest in high-integrity, nature-based solutions. This includes our goal to support and mobilize 100 million trees by 2030, our blue carbon commitments, and our partnerships with Indigenous and local communities so that conservation efforts directly benefit the people who steward the land.

Pillar 3: Accelerate Customer Action and Ecosystem Innovation

Finally, we use our technology, pro bono expertise, and global network to help others protect nature, too. Through tools like Agentforce Net Zero, programs like the Salesforce Accelerator, platforms like Uplink, and collaborative partnerships like the NatureTech Alliance, we give businesses, nonprofits, and ecopreneurs the tools they need to measure their environmental impact and scale their own nature solutions.

How to Get Involved

Global corporate commitments are powered by the momentum of everyday individual choices. You don't need to be an executive or an environmental scientist to make a meaningful impact. By making thoughtful choices in your daily routine and supporting local conservation, you help protect natural ecosystems and support thriving communities. Here are practical ways you can get involved:

  • Volunteer with Green Teams: Check to see if your organization offers volunteer opportunities. For example, Earthforce is a Salesforce employee group dedicated to promoting environmental responsibility.
  • Support Local Community Initiatives: Talk to friends and neighbors about local green spaces, attend public council meetings to advocate for urban canopy projects, and share your perspective on community environmental health with local leaders.
  • Choose Sustainable Forestry Products: Select wood and paper products certified by trusted organizations like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Whenever possible, choose reclaimed or upcycled local timber.
  • Adopt Thoughtful Food Habits: Shift toward plant-rich meals and reduce household food waste. Plant-rich diets optimize land use, helping preserve natural forests and regional ecosystems.
  • Plant Native Species and Gardens: Plant native trees or shrubs in your yard or community spaces. Native gardens naturally conserve water and provide vital food and shelter for local pollinators like bees and butterflies.
  • Donate and Leverage Matching Programs: Support verified nature and forest conservation nonprofits. At Salesforce, employees can double their personal contributions through our donation matching program.

Protecting and restoring natural ecosystems is a shared journey that connects global enterprises, local nonprofits, and everyday individuals. Our work at Salesforce is just one part of a much broader global effort to support healthy forests, protect freshwater supplies, and build resilient communities. By taking practical steps in our daily lives—whether by choosing certified sustainable products, volunteering in your community, or planting native gardens—we each play a meaningful role in shaping our shared environment. Together, we can ensure a thriving, more sustainable world for generations to come.
