Is there a reason to have both Related Contacts and Affiliated Contacts on an Org account?

Question

I'm new to my org and to NPSP, and I noticed we have related lists on org accounts for Affiliated Contacts and Related Contacts (and plain old contacts, too). Affiliated and Related Contacts seem to mean/do the same thing, so I'm inclined to remove the Related Contact related list to declutter and limit confusion.

Is there a reason to keep both? If you do use both, why and how do you differentiate which one a contact should be?

Affiliations is the way to go for NPSP. no need for related contacts

They don’t function the same way and every situation, but if it suits your needs, it’s fine to remove them. It can always be put back.  Some people use affiliations of the household members to the household account to help find the role of extended families. The more traditional use of affiliations is to define workplace and social or other memberships, but some people attach contacts directly to accounts for professional relationships. it’s really up to meeting your needs. --Terry
