Count Case records on a Knowledge Article

When Cases are related to a knowledge article, you can view the related Case records (looks like a related list) on the Article detail page.  I am looking to do the following:

1.  Count related case records (for the Article) shown on the Article detail page.

2.  Field update to '⌗ of case records' field on Article detail page.

3.  If '⌗ of case records' >= 3, then mark Public Knowledge Base field=TRUE and Validation Status field=Approved External.

I haven't been able to figure out how to get a count of Case records on an Article.  I don't think the Case to Article relationship will allow a rollup summary as the field type is not available. 

Any help/suggestions much appreciated!

    Thank you...ugh, that's what I thought.

    Has anyone written a trigger to do the count of Case records related to the Article?  I'm more administrator and don't have a lot of dev experience.  I wasn't able to find any examples online that worked.  Thanks in advance!
