What are best practices for Opportunity Line Items for services instead of products?

I'm setting up a SF instance for a company that sells mostly services instead of products. They sell  different types of services, for example Managed Services, Professional Services, Resale Services, etc. Each opportunity may include one or more types of services, each priced separately. The pricing is not standard: prices are calculated on a case-by-case basis for each opportunity using external tools.  The company is converting from another CRM to Salesforce. In the current CRM, a line item record is automatically created for each type of service, where the likely revenue from each line item is calculated based on values entered in opportunity fields.

I'm trying to set up something similar in SF. My plan is to rename Products as Revenue Line Items (RLIs) and to automatically create RLIs on saving an opportunity. The RLIs will have the following fields: service type, likely revenue, cost, profit. Values for all these fields will be automatically filled in from opportunity fields. I have several question related to this plan, all related to Quantity and List Price/Sales Price in Product records. Any insights will be appreciated!

1) Since Quantity is clearly irrelevant for a service, the best thing to do would be to give it a default value of 1 and to remove it from view. If I do this, will it break any built-in calculations or features in SF?

2) I'm also planning to rename Sales Price as Likely Amount and to remove the List Price from view. Similar question, will doing so break anything?

3) I've set up a Price Book with different types of services as Products. I had to assign an arbitrary number as the price of each service in order to be able to save them as Product records. Assigning an arbitrary price is something I'd like to avoid. Is there a way to add Products to an opportunity without creating a price in a Price Book?

    Hi Yury,

    As per my understanding,  it shouldn't be any issue in breaking any built in calculations and renaming sales price.  For 3 point you would need to have atleast standard price book to add products when creating price book.

    Also if you have Premier or Signature Success Plans,  you can request Expert Coaching individual session so that you can have more inputs on your implementation.
