We have Salesforce NPSP, and we use both hard and soft credits. The DAF, company, and family foundation gets hard credit with the respective individual(s) getting soft credit.

I'm curious for those that have the same set-up, how you are counting donors? For example, if you have a DAF like Fidelity that has five donors this year, are you counting "1" or "5."

I ask because I only pull hard credit in my fiscal reports, and I use the unique count feature on the Account ID. Since not all of our Opportunities have a Primary Contact, and, therefore, missing a Contact Role ID, I'm wondering how best to count, or if I should?

Hi there!  This is a common issue because of how Salesforce awards Soft Credits.  If your goal is to show at the contact or household account level that an individual made a gift through a DAF or Family Foundation, then you need a way to award that Contact a soft credit you can identify as such.  You have two options, but in both cases, you'll need to add Primary Contacts for all your gifts so that you can track credits.

Option 1: Change the default Primary Donor behavior.

In NPSP Settings, under Donations> Contact Roles, enable "Always Rollup to Primary Contact Role."  By default, this is unchecked.  While unchecked, any Primary Contact on an Opportunity which is placed on an Organizational account (such as a DAF), will only ever be awarded a SOFT credit.  If you check this box, the Primary Contact will ALWAYS be awarded a HARD credit, regardless of if the gift is on a Household or Organizational account.

You can then count Contacts with Hard Credits as donors, and/or rollup those credits to the Household and count from there.

Option 2: Summarize giving via Foundations/DAFs as a specific role.

You can create a custom Role for this style of giving, and summarize it's soft credits on the Contact and then ultimately on the Household records.  I personally prefer this, because I feel like Option 1 is a bit of a hammer.  It just really depends on your organization and what type of giving you typically manage.

Here you would start by adding a custom picklist value to the Role field on the Opportunity Contact Role. You want it to be distinct, so I like to use something like "Proxy Donor" or "Passthrough Donor."  Doesn't matter, so so long as YOU know what it is.  Then you create a custom currency field on the Contact called "Proxy Giving" or whatever you like.  Again, so you know what it is. Finally, you have to create a custom rollup to populate this number.  This is done in NPSP Settings, under Donations> Customizable Rollups.  This is pretty involved, so...  Here's the documentation.

Now you can summarize this proxy giving, maybe create a formula field that adds to to the contact's hard credits, and then run your lists with consideration for this field.  This approach is more work, but it's more nuanced.  You can specifically find/track these very specific kinds of donors.  It also lets you award this credit to MULTIPLE persons on the gift via multiple Opportunity Contact Role entries, rather than just the single Primary Contact.

Happy to talk it out, just dm me!
