I seem to remember someone saying in my training that I should always (almost always?) click the "active" button in my campaigns. I could be wrong.
Can someone help clarify the active button's purpose in a campaign. I can click "active" even if the start and end dates for the campaign are in the past. When should I not click it?
Is it automated so when the end date comes, the campaign unclicks itself from being "active"?

There is no automation involved with the action button unless you install or add it yourself. There are some things that Salesforce requires the active button to be set. For example to add members to a campaign from a report.
