Nothing I have found in Salesforce help regarding Salesforce Communities (https://help.salesforce.com/articleView?id=networks_overview.htm&type=5) mentions this feature, nor states if it is or is not possible.

Amit, that document references activating direct messages in a community and starting new conversations, but doesn't reference leaving a direct message conversation. sakshi, same issue. Also the second link you send is in reference to Private Messages, not Direct Messages, which are different functionalities. As noted by Salesforce:
NOTE: Private messages and direct messages are separate features. Direct messages are newer and offer a richer feature set for private communication in communities. Direct messages are based on Chatter and offer a rich text editor that supports inline images and attachments. With direct messages, you can start a message right from a feed post.
