However, for individuals involved with numerous records on this object, the main chatter feed (on homepage and chatter tab) are getting cluttered with record updates and such. I'd like to know if there is a way to prevent these field updates from appearing in the primary chatter feed, while keeping them intact on the records' feeds.
Bonus if the solution involves allowing comments on the custom object to still show on the primary feed, but will accept completely ignoring the custom object in the main feed.

Hello, try using the feed tracking to disable the fields you don't want to appear in the chatter feed history. That worked for me.
You can acces feed tracking by searching it in the Setup search box.
