Is there a reason I cannot select a custom field as the dependent field? Is there a way to create the dependency between these two fields?

Unless they have a legitamte reason for doing it this way (and I honestly can't think of one) the first part of my overhaul would be getting rid of these custom fields (but that's me)
Anyway, it soundslike you need to establish a Field Dependancy, and then Map all of the Controlling and Controlled picklist values
