How does MC determine the linkage between synced sf data objects in data designer?

Question

After installing marketing cloud connector, you're then able to create data syncs to SF objects. When you create these data syncs, MC will automatically create the link relationships for you w/in data designer between these objects.

Does anyone know where or how MC determine which fields to use to create the relationships? ie, from contact object to the account object, etc. My assumption is that this is set somewhere w/in SF and the data sync pulls this over.

The other reason for my question is I'm pretty sure I've seen this relationship update/change between two objects, and am trying to prevent this from happening in the future.
