creating child opportunities parent account to be taken over automatically

When creating child records (e.g. child opportunities or child projects) standard fields like e.g. account is not directly pre-populated by parent value. How can I achieve this, seems very strange why this is not already working as standard (as a child project will always have same account as the parent project) ->do I miss anything here? Do you know how to set this up? Many thanks

    no ->it is not a requirement to just have a look-up ->it is a system requirement upon creating the child record (in the creation screen) SF is asking again to specify the account otherwise you can't create the child record. And we would like to have this already filled by the parent value and not the need again to manually specifiy before to hit create child opportunity. thanks
