I am looking for a way to utilize Salesforce as a participant tracking tool.  We currently use our instance to track employers, contacts, and services to those employers as a non profit who provide workforce development solutions.  We have another "customer" in our work: the job seekers.  We would like to have a self-service portal for those customers to log into and create an account that would track their skills, job interests, and services they need or are using in our centers.  I'm wondering if the communities feature in Salesforce would provide that avenue for us?

Hi Lori - Yup!  Sounds like Community is the way to go!  Especially, if you want them to be able to log in and track status or do other things within the community.  You can read up more on communities here: http://www.salesforce.com/communities/overview/.

If you just want to give them a forum to sumbit "leads", you can essentially create a web-to-lead or web-to-case form on a basic website and have the job seekers fill out the forms from the website.  The form will automatically create a lead or case within your Salesforce.com instance.  The users won't be able to track thes status or see their data after it's submitted.  This method is useful only if you just need to receive a one-time submission.

    Hope that helps.  Good luck!
