In service cloud console, on the opportunity level we have a lookup to the contact and the name populates on the opportunity.
To update the interaction log with a contact name we have to click on the lookup contact name and go into the contact record and then the name populates.
How can I get the name to populate from the opportunity record into the interaction log?
*customer roles do not seem to work and Salesforce does not allow a workflow to auto populate the "name" in activities.

As the name of the contact is stored on the contact not the opportunity the opportunity won't see that as a change and therefore won't update the opportunity I'm afraid.
The only way you would be able to do this is to use some apex code.
You can track the name on the contact.
