How do I make an account field with the count of activities related?

Goal is to have a field on the page of an account that shows how many completed activities related to this account have taken place this year. Currently we run a report of activities with accounts, but the users are demanding it as a field on the account page, and having this as an account field would make reporting easier in some situations. 

 

     When I try to make an account formula I do not see the ability to insert data from activity objects; how is this done, please?

    It can't be done with a Formula or a Roll-Up Summary (RUS) field.  The Report is really your best/easiest option.  To create a custom Activity Count on the Account object you're looking at custom code, triggers, etc.
