Activate and Validate Your Segment

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:

  • Activate a segment in a campaign and verify its membership.
  • Track basic metrics to measure segment performance.
  • Identify how segmentation informs future campaign strategy.

Use Segmentation in Practice

In this final unit, you put everything you have learned into practice. In earlier units, you followed how Paulo at Northern Trail Outfitters (NTO) builds and refines segments to target customers effectively. Now you complete similar steps yourself by activating a published segment, confirming that it includes the right audience, and reviewing basic performance metrics.

These activities show how segmentation supports real campaign activity. You then complete the hands-on challenge to verify that your segment works as intended.

Connect A Segment to a Campaign

Once a segment is published, you add it to a campaign to define who should receive the campaign. You can do this directly from the Campaign setup or from the Segmentation canvas.

When the campaign runs, the published segment determines who enters and when, based on its activation timing, entry rules, and refresh behavior as new data becomes available.

Because the segment controls campaign entry, taking time to confirm that the segment is defined and connected correctly helps ensure the campaign reaches the intended audience.

Validate Results

After connecting a segment to a campaign, confirm that it includes the people you intended to target. Review the segment’s membership to catch issues before the campaign runs and ensure your filters and publish settings work as expected.

At NTO, Paulo checks membership to make sure the audience size and composition seem right. If the segment includes far more or fewer people than expected, the filters may be too broad or too restrictive, or the data may not have refreshed yet.

It’s also worth confirming the refresh schedule. Standard and Rapid publish options update at different intervals, which can affect when new behavior appears in the segment.

Taking a moment to validate these details helps ensure the campaign reaches the correct audience.

View Segment Members in a Campaign

Once a segment is published and connected to a campaign, you can view its membership directly from the campaign record. The Preview Segment option shows who currently qualifies for the campaign based on your published rules, using the segment’s current data.

This preview lets you quickly confirm that the campaign targets the audience you intended before activating. If the results don’t match what you expected, reviewing membership here can help you spot issues with filter logic, publish timing, or data availability.

This visibility also reduces the need for repeated publishes, which helps preserve Data Cloud credits and prevents unnecessary delays.

Refine Strategy

After a campaign runs, segment performance helps you understand whether your targeting worked as intended. Engagement metrics like opens, clicks, and conversions show how well your message resonated with the audience you defined.

Strong engagement often indicates that your filters identified people who were ready to act, while lower engagement may suggest that the criteria were too broad, too narrow, or not aligned with customer behavior at that time. These signals can guide future adjustments to your filters or publish settings.

In the hands-on challenge that follows, you apply these ideas by activating a segment, validating its membership, and confirming that it behaves as expected when connected to a Flow.

Create and Activate Your Segment

Summer is underway and you’re preparing a campaign that targets customers who have birthdays in July. Before the campaign can run, you need to create and publish a segment with the correct audience.

In this challenge, you create and publish a segment, verify that its membership reflects your target criteria, and use it as the starting audience for your campaign.

Note

You might notice some flags in your flow related to scheduling or unpublished emails. Don't worry — since this challenge doesn't walk you through activating a full campaign, those flags are expected. You can pass the challenge successfully without addressing them.
