Import Product Information

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:

  • Describe the need for importing data.
  • Set up your Salesforce org for data import.
  • Import data using the data import template.

Accelerate Product Creation with Bulk Import

Migrating product data from legacy systems is a common challenge that businesses face during digital transformation. While implementing Agentforce Revenue Management for their product-to-cash journey, InfinitraBytes plans to consolidate product data from existing catalogs, databases, and spreadsheets, and then migrate that data to a product catalog in Agentforce Revenue Management. This process is time consuming, incurs costs, requires manual intervention, and prone to errors.

Similarly, during special events such as festival sales or new product launches, product designers at InfinitraBytes create a large number of products in the catalog. Doing this manually is labour intensive. The solution? Product Catalog Management.

Product Catalog Management provides a seamless way to import bulk product and catalog data, that is stored in CSV templates, into the product catalog. This helps organizations to achieve superior efficiency, accuracy, and scalability while maintaining data quality.

To get started, first enable the import functionality in your org.

Prepare Your Org for Bulk Data Import

Product Catalog Management uses the Data Processing Engine (DPE) to facilitate import of bulk product data. DPE is designed to orchestrate large-scale data transformations and handle large volumes of data from various data sources, including Salesforce objects. To use DPE capabilities, enable Data 360 in your org.

Enabling Data 360 activates the import functionality and a set of seven DPE templates for various functions of Product Catalog Management are made available in your org.

  • Create attribute category records and assign attributes.
  • Create attribute records.
  • Create product category qualification and disqualification records.
  • Create product qualification and disqualification records.
  • Create catalog and category records, and assign attributes.
  • Create product records and override inherited attributes.

The DPE templates.

Each template defines how the column headers within the data import CSV templates map to the corresponding fields in the target objects. You can clone these DPE templates for any customizations such as adding custom fields.

Here’s a look at the DPE templates for creating product records.

The DPE template for creating product records.

The Data Source element (1) defines the source, in this case the data import CSV template and the primary key. The Insert Product Records element (2) defines the mappings. You can click an element and then select View Configuration (3) to view the mappings.

Consider the example in this screenshot. Here, the Product_Name field is mapped to the Name field in the object. You can also view other mappings.

Now, it’s time to clone and activate the DPE template so that the import process can use it.

Prepare Data to Import

Product Catalog Management provides data import templates in CSV format where you can define the data to import. To prepare the data to import, first download the CSV template from the Product Catalog Management home page.

Here are the seven templates that are available.

Notice that for each DPE definition, there is a corresponding CSV template.

Review one of the templates, Create Product Records and Override Inherited Attributes.

The Create Product Records and Override Inherited Attributes template.

In this template:

  • The Key column acts as the primary key as defined in the CSV datasource element of the DPE definition.
  • Other columns represent product attributes which are mapped in the DPE definition.
  • Values for the columns Key, Product_ConfigureDuringSale, Product_Name, and Product_ProductCode are already provided.

Next, learn how to import this data into your org.

Import Data

On the Product Catalog Management home page, use the Import Data tile to initiate the data import. Using the Import using DPE option, upload your CSV template, select the DPE definition that you activated and then start the import.

The Import Logs page displays the status of the import. Click The refresh button to update the status. You have set up the necessary DPE definition and imported bulk product data into the catalog.

Wrap Up

The team at InfinitraBytes is impressed by how simplified their product catalog is, all thanks to Product Designer Manoj’s diligent work and of course Product Catalog Management.

And congratulations to you too! You now have the skills to enhance your company’s product setup by indexing product data, configuring product search and product deep cloning, and setting up bulk loading of product data. You are also ready to confidently optimize product listing for customers by configuring and customizing the product list page. Use these skills to modernize your company’s product-browsing experience and handle any volume of customer demand, big or small.
