I have a custom object that is open for most staff to view but very occasionally, an instance of that object needs to be restricted so that only a subset of users can see it. Is there a recommended way to accomplish this?

Hi, this is possible as that subset of data should have recognizable attributes such as city, state or anything. In this way Criteria Based Sharing Rule can be setup that'll restrict the subset of data and will give access to selected users/roles/profiles.
