messaging end user related list not available on lead and contact despite the object having a relationship with those objects? Why? Thanks

What I can suggest as a practical path: try adding it as a Dynamic Related List instead of relying on the standard page layout related list picker, Dynamic Related Lists support core standard objects including Contact and Lead and can sometimes surface relationships that don't appear in the classic related list selector.
If Dynamic Related List also doesn't show MessagingEndUser as an option, that would confirm it's a genuine platform limitation rather than a page layout config issue, worth logging with Salesforce Support at that point to get the actual technical reason.
