Is this group that active in actually meeting in person? I am new to Tableau and looking to see if there are any actual meetups.

Not so regularly, but there are events every year.
July Triangle Tableau User Group Meeting Tickets, Thu, Jul 28, 2016 at 5:00 PM | Eventbrite
Also, there are a couple of meetup.com groups you should consider joining:
http://www.meetup.com/Raleigh-Visualization-Meetup/ (just started)
http://www.meetup.com/Research-Triangle-Analysts/ (very active, 2x a month, more general than just tableau)
I'm not exactly sure why some events show up on eventbrite but not the community.tableau site.
Come to the upcoming july meetup (eventbrite link above) and lets discuss.
