I'm not very good with Apex (or coding in general), but I know I need my Apex class to be saved as .cls vs the automatic .apxc. Is there a way I can change that? I haven't been able to find it anywhere that I can think to look.

The apxc extension for Apex classes is specific to the Developer Console. .cls is the extensions that the Metadata API expects.
