Here is my situation: We use Teams Webinar and then import the list of registrants/attendees into Salesforce.  Typically this is a mix of both contacts and also new leads.

When I import to the campaign, it seems I need to have separate lists for leads and contacts, but this requires manual effort for us to cross reference the list and see who is a lead vs. who is already a customer.

The simplest way I can figure to do this is to first import the list as "Update existing contacts" then manually remove all of the contacts from the CSV and import again as "Update and create new leads", but there has to be a better way to do this!  Please let me know what I am missing.  Thank you!

We had a similar webinar import process and the annoying part was always splitting existing people from new ones before loading anything. Once it became a regular thing, we used Skyvia (https://skyvia.com/connectors/salesforce) to handle the matching against Salesforce first, update the records that already existed, and only create new ones when there wasn’t a match. That saved us from cleaning up the CSV by hand every time.
