We use NPSP and currently process online memberships and donation payments via FormAssembly and Authorize.net.

We’d like to add the option for our donors to cover the transaction fees for their memberships or donations.

What is the best practice for entering the transaction fee in Salesforce so that our revenue reports for accounting correctly mirror credit card receipts, but our donor reports reflect donation amounts (less fees)?

Take for example we receive a $100 donation and the donor agreed to pay transaction fees (3% for the purposes of this example). We would create an opportunity (donation record type) for $100. What to do with the additional $3?

My initial instinct is to create an additional opportunity record type of “fees” and to create a child “fee” opportunity for $3.

I don’t want to reinvent the wheel, so before I do something stupid I wanted to seek input from the community to see what others do. Thank you in advance for your feedback and guidance.

Agree with the above - Donation is for $103 - all tax deductible. The $3 in my org is just a field on the donation so that I can monitor the choices of donors and so we assure we're meeting donor intent to use that money the "right way."
