Does the Mailchimp integration always create a Salesforce Contact when it creates an MC Subscriber record and there is no existing Salesforce Contact with the same email address? I have quite a few MC Subscriber records with no corresponding Contact.

Based on the Mailchimp Data Sync documentation, it seems that it can create Leads for MC Contacts that are not already in your CRM, but I do not see the ability to create new Contacts. Perhaps check to see if those Subscribers were created as Leads instead, and make sure your Data Sync configuration has been set up correctly.
