I have created a chart directly in a dashboard without any lens and I want to rename the field. I cannot find rename field option on the show fields panel of the dashboard. Please help.

Do you mean relabel the field?
Open the dataset in the editor mode (right drop-down arrow and click edit)
Then click explore and, beside the dataset name, on the right drop-down arrow, select show fields panel.
On the fields panel, select the field you want to relabel and then select change labels, and voila.
You can also do this through the dataset XMD
