Until last week, I have been able to go back and forth, but this week, it seems that switching back to Classic is impossible. I'm on a MacBook Pro and in the latest Chrome. I can do it in Safari, just not Chrome.

Open the Javascript Console window (right-click > Inspect, then click the Console tab), try to switch to Lightning, and see if you get an errors or warnings. You'll need this info / screenshot if you decide to open a case with Salesforce.
Also - do you have any anti-malware or ad-blocker extensions in Chrome? Try disabling as many extensions as you can. Window > Extensions
