What is the best way to go about matching duplicate leads and existing contacts?

I've activated the standard Lead and contact rules and then made a " fuzzy" duplicate rule but I'm still not having much success. I could be doing something wrong but  I'm wondering if anyone in the community had specific fields that they added to their duplicate rules to be more successful in finding lead/contact duplicates?

    (assuming you require Email on Leads and Contacts) the strongest/best match that I have found is Email Address (tight)

     

    When you get into Fuzzy Name or Text field matches it's hit or miss because you're at the mercy of how the user enters the data, like: James, Jim, Jimmy, Jonathan, John, Jon, Jack, J-Dawg, JD, JR, etc...
