How do I tie 2 objects together by date in a report?

Question

In this org, I have opportunities related to a custom object called Pattern. Pattern has a related custom object called Pattern Forecast. Every Pattern has a Pattern Forecast for every month. Multiple opportunities can be related to a single Pattern. I am trying to create a forecasting report that shows me by Pattern the opportunities and Pattern Forecasts for each month using the close date of the opportunity and the forecast date of the Pattern Forecast. I tried creating a joined report in Classic but joined was not a format option. I also tried pulling the forecast amount onto the opportunity using custom formula fields (so I could build the report on opportunity data alone) but I can't figure out how to get the opportunity to find the related pattern forecast of the same month. Ideas?
