I created a custom object to create and manage requests. Now, when i assign the requests to new owner, the "send notification email" checkbox is bydefault checked. Since I already have a workflow created to notify about the new request, I do not want this to be checked bydafault. I checked the pagelayout for this object too and there is no such option to uncheck this like we have on case object. Can someone please help on how to uncheck this automatically?

Check the field itself through setup->object->field->edit. It's very likely that it has a default value of TRUE.
