But I just see there is an issue with year since it takes the first number into account. Therefore 10 and 1 (Oct and jan) will have the same issue. Apologies...
This is due to it being a text field, and there's not much you can do here unless you change it to 2 fields and the formula return numbers.
Another thing you can do if it's simply for reporting is to use the date field and group it by Calendar month by clicking on the down arrow on the name of the column, select group date by>Calendar Month (in this example I'm grouping the standard Created date field):
But I'm facing the same issue for the sorting (at least there's no need for a formula field)
