Why does changing Contact owner via Data Loader modify some activities tied to that contact and doesn't modify the rest?

When I transfer contacts via data loader, i.e. change the owner of a contact, some activities tied to a contact are being modified as indicated by the last-modified date field.

 

The modification to last date modified does not affect all activities of a contact transferred and appear completely random.

 

What I'm trying to find out is why some activities are being updated with a new last-modifed date and why some aren't.

    Hey Chris,

     

    Using your suggestion, I looked at chages in my weekly exprt file after I deleted a contact today and noticed a bunch of modified tasks that didn't delete. I then noticed they had been modified to today's date.

     

    The activities are being modified because we have Shared Activities enabled in our org.

     

    Staff A to Staff B changes causes anyone else cc'd on an email (posted by email to salesforce) or sharing the task to have their own "version" of the task update the last modfied date field.
