I've added an external data source to connect two of our orgs together, and wanted to allow selection of an account from one org on accounts from the other. The external lookup field is working, but it is just a text field that requires the ID from the parent org. Is there any way to allow the user to lookup by name from the external object?

Hi Adam,
May I know if you are referring to Accounts from another Salesforce org (which looks like Salesforce to Salesforce is needed) or is it from an external object? For external objects, I don't think you can show a list on an external lookup since you cannot query on external objects - they aren't within Salesforce org.
