Subtab Components sidebars are not appearing

I have created a console app for which includes the Case object.  When you click on the case to open it in the console it is going to be opened as a subtab of a custom object that it is linked to via lookup field.  The problem I have is that the left sidebar subtab components on the case layout I am using are not showing.  If I put a subtab sidebar component on the custom object, the subtab sidebar will appear on the detail tab of the custom object.  Why will my case subtab component not show?

    Hi Micheal,

    You can control what items will open in primary tab and which item will open in the subtab.

     

    This is the standard salesforce functionality.
