Please correct me if I am wrong. Below I have jotted down a few points, about what I understood about Salesforce. If my below understanding is wrong, please do correct me. So, here goes.
What is Salesforce?
Salesforce, is technically a cloud based service. The term cloud based service means, that data is stored in different computers/servers located in different places.
So, now that defines the cloud part in salesforce. Let me now, define the services part.
Salesforce allows you to create apps for your business purpose. This data would be stored in cloud, which can be accessed by the business users through their mobile or desktop or wherever they go, on the fly.
Salesforce was intitally started as a cloud based Customer Relationship Management Tool, which would store customer and sales related details, which again would be accessible anywhere. Later, they expanded to providing services like creating apps, and using their platform as a service.
Salesforce currently, is a platform based service or platform as a service(PAAS). This means, you can use salesforce platform(force.com) to create apps, use their server space by subscribing to a monthly fees. Usually, companies, instead of buying servers, and storage space can subscribe to salesforce’s service user their platform to create apps, store data and access data wherever they go.
So, what exactly is Salesforce?
It is a mix of many things or parts.
1. Salesforce is a platform, where you can login to administer or control functionalities.
It has its own platform called force.com. A platform meaning, a place or environment where you can create your own apps or do some customization. For eg: If you are logging to salesforce developer enviornment, it will take you the force.com page.
2. Salesforce also acts as an application. You can use salesforce to track the data, access data on the flow.
Creating custom apps is also one of the features or part in salesforce. For eg: Garage, is an app that I have created in salesforce using the Build app functionality.
3. Salesforce is also a platform based service.
It is also a platform based service. You can subscribe to its services for a monthly rate. All CRM related services can be utilized using salesforce’s service.
