What security settings override profile setting?

We have a custom object that has OWD of Public Read/Write. A profile has CRU for the custom object. However, when I log in with this profile, I can view the object, but I can't create or update. What other security settings would prevent me from creating/editing? Would validation rules do it?

    For creating, if you have record types, the record type might not be assigned to that profile. Otherwise, if the profile in question has CRE and the default for the org is public R/W, and it's not a child in a master-detail where it's inherited the parent's permissions, which are more restrictive, I have no idea.
