Partner Roles - Can they be mass updated?

I know SFDC offers a Replace functionality when Partner Roles are being updated, but we have a need to mass update via something like a data loader.  Has anyone done this before?  Is this possible?

    Thanks John.  I need to go beyond the replace functionality.  We are looking to replace one of the current partner role values with two and that is not possible with the replace feature.  I did discover that the parnter object can only be created or deleted. Has anyone ever updated the partner related list with an api tool? Wondering what challenges you may have encountered, if any.
