How do I access a custom page variation in the community portal?

We use the Napili template (Summer '16) for our community portal, and my goal right now is to have some topics display on a Topic Detail page that has both the discussion and article tabs, but to have other, specific topics (about 4 of them) display on a different page variation that only has the discussion tab.

 

I created a page variation for the Topic Detail page and set a profile to have visibility, but now I don't know how to navigate to the page. Is it that one profile can only see one type of page variation at a time? Ultimately, I would want everyone to be able to see both types of pages depending on the topic they're viewing, but I'm not clear on whether this is possible or the correct way to go about it.
