I have checked out Help and the support article does mention that it is available in the LIghtning Experience (https://help.salesforce.com/HTViewHelpDoc?id=google_gmail_activate.htm&language=en_US) but I can't seem to find how I can send email using the Compose Gmail link like I can in Salesforce Classic.
Any assistance / guidance would be greatly appreciated

@Andrew, Have you tried using Email option on detail page n Lightning? It allowed you to send email from Salesforce but it doesn't compose in new tab as it's working in Salesforce classic . Using lightning you can compose email and can send to customers.
