We are also recording the order process for a new collection of products, the majority of which is handled by another system. Salesforce will hold the customer data (fed by a web to lead form) and various rules send the information to another department for the complicated process of handling the order itself. Once dealt with, the information will be fed back to Salesforce and an asset will be loaded against the account. This allows the Sales team to easily see that a customer has ordered a collection and they can contact the relevant department to find out exactly which products are included in it (there could be hundreds).
Sales teams will also be getting opportunities in for these collections, which we want to track. However, the main management will take place outside of Salesforce and once the collection is paid for the asset will be fed back to Salesforce automatically. So I want Sales to be able to close the opportunity as won, but I don't want it to create an asset on the account.
I was thinking of having a new opportunity record type for this collection, and somehow putting in a rule to not add an asset when changed to closed won, but I'm not sure how to achieve this.
My other idea is to have a new opportunity record type with a new stage value of 'Won, no asset' so this stage can be reported on but it won't create an asset.
This second option sounds much easier but before I test it I'm trying to think of anything I may have missed.
Has anyone got any ideas please? Thanks, help is always appreciated!

The solution will depend on what mechanism you are using to create Assets on ClosedWon Opps today.
