However, the same user looking at contact list view will see the checkboxes.
I just want them to enable them to do mass editing via list views, do not want to grant that permission.
I cant find anything in help that indicates why this would be the case. Any ideas? The checkboxes just disappear.

Thanks Aiden, they can edit single records inline without an issue (one record type is selected in list view). They just cant edit multiple records at once, because the checkboxes themselves just do not appear.
